5 Things that define Generation Alpha kids
1. Incredibly diverse
2. Digitally native
3. Globally-connected
4. Dedicated to inclusivity
5. Care deeply about climate activism
As a brief explainer, here’s what these 5 characteristics of Gen Alpha mean from a research perspective:
1. Incredibly diverse: A global report last year found that 47% of US kids do not identify as white, with 96% believing that it’s important to treat all people fairly, no matter what they look like. (In comparison, 79% of Millennials said the same when they were children.)
2. Digitally native: These kids are born into a world where the smart phones already exists and the iPad was launched the year this generation began (2010). In fact, a recent survey found that 54% of Gen Alpha kids own a tablet—and they watch a lot of YouTube: Kids, Disney+, and Netflix.
3. Globally-connected: They’re the first generation to be fully shaped by a global culture, thanks to the likes of pop culture being shared from both East and West due to the influencers of TikTok, Manga, K-Pop, YouTube, and more. And, of course, let’s not forget how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted virtual learning.
4. Dedicated to inclusivity: The global report also found that 79% of boys and 86% of girls in Gen Alpha said that it’s very important for boys and girls to be treated fairly. Plus, 93% of Gen Alpha believes that people should be accepted for who they are regardless of race and ethnicity, gender expression, sexual orientation, differently wired brains, body size, etc.
5. Care deeply about climate activism: These kids are growing up with parents who have been recycling for years. But more than that, the global report found that 95% of Gen Alpha kids prioritize taking care of the environment. Even more inspiring is that 97% of Gen Alpha students believe that it is important to make sure that everyone has enough food to eat.
