Why This 38-Year-Old Mom Is Leaving the House at 11PM
The continued adventures of this unicorn in suburbia, part 2.
Welcome! Parenting in Hard Mode is for those of us who are raising social justice-minded families and getting real about our mental health—all while navigating the ups and downs of parenting when life is on the difficult setting. I’m a sober bisexual Latina mom with ADHD who gave birth during the early days of the pandemic—which pretty much sums up my own “hard mode.” Please subscribe to join our community of parents who totally *get* it.
TL;DW (too long; didn’t watch): In this video, I discuss my queer identity as a unicorn in suburbia and why I decided to choose myself tonight by leaving my 4-year-old son at home, safely sleeping and being watched over by his daddy, while I went dancing with one of my oldest and best of friends. Yes, at 11pm at night.
Well, if you watched the video, then here’s what happened next:
I had a freaking FANTASTIC time. I danced, drank a couple of cokes, hugged my friends, couldn’t stop smiling, and got so sweaty that I had to put everything I wore for just 4 hours straight into the laundry when I got home at 2:15am.
My shining moment of the night was dancing like I’d never danced before to Pitbull’s “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)”—I just had to represent my Cuban roots. Plus, it was my finale.
Now I am home, about to publish this post, and go straight to sleep. And as I predicted earlier… I truly filled my cup and filled my soul tonight. I’ll be a tired mama tomorrow, but choosing myself tonight was just what I needed.
When is the last time you did something to fill your soul, fellow moms and parents? Tell me your stories!
Abrazos,
Your friendly neighborhood bisexual Latina mom with ADHD raising a Gen Alpha kid
